The Boeing Company is actively pursuing technologies that will increase the performance and durability of finish systems on aircraft. New materials and methods, such as sol-gel surface preparations, have shown considerable promise in improving adhesion performance and thus improve the durability of the finish systems.Additionally, new tools are being developed to assess trace surface contamination and test protocols are being developed to evaluate the complex interaction of factors leading to adhesion of the coating system.In this paper, the relative performance and robustness of new materials, processes, and tools and their effects on adhesion and durability of the finish systems will be discussed.
