Last month in his safety column, Carl Metzgar didn't hold back. He criticized the agency for bragging about its income from fines and taking credit for a reduction in fatalities. Metzgar received feedback from readers who experience MSHA inspectors firsthand. One producer wrote, "The bottom line is this, instead of promoting safety and working with companies, they are more intent on playing the gotcha game and writing citations for absurd things that have no basis in real safety."
