When asked "what is kaolin," most people would plead ignorance, some might stare blankly and still others might say: "wasn't he O.J.'s pool boy?" One of the least-known of all raw materials, kaolin is an industrial staple both here and abroad, finding use in everything from porcelain to paints to the very paper on which this story is printed. While there are some pockets of kaolin-rich deposits scattered throughout the country, nearly three-quarters of the U.S. supply of this white-clay substance can be found in a region about 100 miles southeast of Atlanta. Removing overburden to allow kaolin haul-off for processing has been the mainstay of W.F. Jackson Construction Co. Inc., since its inception, and the company has taken an aggressive, innovative approach to meeting the needs of a changing industry.
