Aggregates production falls 3.6 percent in 2002

For the first time since 1991, total aggregates production in the United States has decreased. About 2.68 billion metric tons of aggregate were shipped last year, down from the 2.78 billion metric tons shipped in 2001. The estimated annual production of crushed stone shipped for consumption in 2002 was 1.57 billion metric tons, a 1.9 percent decrease compared with 2001, according to USGS. The estimated 2002 total annual production of crushed stone was the second highest production ever recorded in the U.S. The estimated annual production of construction sand and gravel shipped for consumption in 2002 was 1.12 billion metric tons, a 0.9 percent decrease compared with 2001, USGS says.
