A New Challenge for Oils

The American Petroleum Institute's (API) CI-4 licensing will begin September 5, shortly before the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) October deadline for mandatory production of heavy-duty diesel engines that emit lower nitrogen oxide levels without increasing particulate matter, hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide emissions.Many engine manufacturers will meet the new EPA standards with low-emissions engines equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The new engines put greater demands on engine oil, including increased heat, soot and acid. These problems can result in shortened drain intervals, increased deposits and wear without the proper engine oil formulation.
