The bipartisan leadership of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee outlined several proposals they are considering that substantially increase the nation's in-vestment in highways and transits projects to 375 billion dollars over the next six years. In addition, two polling firms outlined the public support for increased funding for federal highway and transit programs. "This proposal will have a positive impact on every community in all 50 states;' says U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), the chairman of the Transportation Commit-tee. "Today, the single largest obstacle to transportation and economic efficiency is congestion. We are in a congestion crisis. Traffic congestion costs the United States more than 67 billion dollars annually - more than 3.6 billion hours in delays and 5.7 billion gallons of fuel wasted in traffic jams."
