Collecting missions in Poland in 1999.

Three collecting missions were organized by the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of the Plant Breeding and Acclimatisation Institute at Radzikow in 1999 at 3 regions of Poland, i.e. the valley of lower Narew river, Ponidzie and Przedkarpacie. The aim was to collect old cultivars and local populations of crop plants, cultivated in gardens and fields, old cultivars of fruit trees and wild-growing fodder, medicine and ornamental species. A total of 339 accessions of 41 genera of crop plants were collected during these expeditions. Genetic erosion of crop plants is still being continued and old cultivars, widespread in the recent past, are now replaced by modern cultivars. Nevertheless, old, valuable cultivars and local populations can still be found in many regions of Poland. There is a constant need to search and collect them for gene banks before they disappear..
