Nanowires hold several advantages over the bulky semiconductor materials used to make conventional solar cells: They are extremely small and lightweight, require only minimal quantities of material and simple manufacturing processes, and exhibit superior light-trapping ability. So far, however, their performance has not lived up to expectations.
