摘要

Reserachers with the U.S. Dept of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology have developed a damage-tolerant metallic glass demonstrating strength and toughness beyond that of any known material. Their noncrystalline, amorphous structures make the glassy materials inherently strong but inevitably brittle. The new metallic glass is a microalloy of palladium, which has a high bulk-to-shear stiffness ratio that counteracts the brittleness of glasses.
