摘要

Disorder is demonstrated to be a decisive factor that controls the location and the amount of damage caused by a rapid impact on a three-dimensional elastic solid. For strong disorder, the damage is localized close to the point of impact, while for weak disorder, constructive interference leads to fracture in the vicinity of the face opposite to the impact. Dynamical overload seems to hinder the formation of self-affine crack structures. However, the crack surface becomes more rough as the quasistatic limit is approached. [References: 14]
