Simulation as a Tool for Consideration of Safety Aspects in the Land-Use Planning Process

The purpose of this article is to discuss the integration of safety issues into the land-use planning process. A new method is presented for decision making in land-use planning. The focus is on the location of chemical sites (CS), or other industries that have a spatial impact, in urban areas. The method has been developed in an interdisciplinary research project (Land Use Planning and Chemical Sites-LUPACS) financed by the European Union (EU). This paper gives a brief overview of the method, which is explained more fully in the references cited.
