摘要

Over the past century, significant advances in medical practice and healthcare have been achieved based on traditional reductionist biomedical research. Despite this progress, several diseases, such as cancer, are and will remain to be a threat to humans. Other major chronic disorders such as cardiovascular, immunological and behavioral diseases as well as diabetes require long-term medication with potential adverse effects. Moving from reductionist research, that characterizes the individual components of a system of interest, to complex interactions between biomolecules and the human-environment interplay is hard and unfamiliar territory for scientific thought.
