To date, lithium salts represent the first-choice treatment for bipolar disorder.Although clinical lithium efficacy has been widely demonstrated, the exact biochemical mechanisms that underlie the clinical effects of this drug remain only partially unraveled. The most important question is related to the latency in the initiation of the mood stabilization effect of lithium, which is classically delayed for weeks or months, suggesting that the therapeutic effects of this salt could result from neu-ronal modifications, controlled by a pool of late response genes.
