Chile's Mining and Chemicals industries

Chile's chemicals industries consist of 300 companies and some 400 products, with sales representing 4% of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) and about 25% of all industrial contributions to the GDP (1). Chile's major chemical exports include methanol, inorganic compounds (nitrates, iodine, lithium products, sodium chloride), combustibles (gasoline, diesel, fuel oil), algae derivatives, and plastic resins (polypropylene, low-density polyethylene). However, the mining industry-consisting of 100 large and medium-sized companies and more than 1,600 mining operations (2)-dominates Chile's chemical-industry landscape. These companies' primary products include molybdenum, rhenium, iron, lithium, silver, gold, and-most important-copper.
