Lara and Polaris, two new nectarines for Italian peachectarine cultivation.

Details are given of the breeding of these 2 new Italian cultivars. Lara, selected from the cross Flavortop X May Grand in 1979, is mid-early flowering and matures 10 days before Redhaven, producing medium-sized, ovate-spherical to elliptic fruits weighing 120 g on average. Fruits are clear yellow in colour with a moderately brilliant red over-colour covering 80-90% of the surface. The flesh is yellow and of good quality. Polaris, selected in 1982 from the cross Flavortop X Flamekist, is midseasonflowering and matures 28-30 days after Redhaven, producing medium-sized, oblong fruits weighing 165 g on average. Fruits are yellow in colour with a brilliant red over-colour covering 60-80% of the surface. The flesh is intensely yellow and of good quality.
