Hort16A: a new yellow-fleshed kiwifruit from New Zealand

Following an introduction to kiwifruit production and research in New Zealand, the differences between Actinidia chinensis and A. deliciosa, and the commercial potential of A. chinensis, a description is given of Hort16A which is an A. chinensis selection. Plants of Hort16A are more vigorous than those of A. deliciosa cv. Hayward, and fruits mature later than those of Hayward, around 200 days after flowering. Fruits are very large, weighing an average of 100 g, and are elongate-oval with a pronounced protuberance at one end giving them a distinctive beaked appearance. Fruits are similar in colour to other kiwifruits externally, but the pulp is pale green to yellow, becoming golden yellow towards harvest time. Hort16A was developed from an A. chinensis plant grown at Te Puke from seed brought to New Zealand in 1977. A selected plant from natural pollination was crossed as female with another introduction which was made in 1981. Hort16A was registered as a new variety in 1995 and named ZespriTM Gold.
