Micropropagation has been tried successfully on many olive cultivars. This article surveys results so far. Replacing saccharose in the substrate by mannitol led to an increase in length and in the number of nodes of the micro-propagule. When plantedout in the field micro-propagules showed no significant morphological differences from plants grown from normal cuttings. The choice of "mother plant" is critical in producing oil of good quality. An advantage of the new technique is the rapid and inexpensive production of new nursery stock.
