In a trial at Ginosa, grape cultivars Sugraone, Matilde and Michele Palieri on 775 P rootstocks were planted in winter 1993 and grown on the tendone system. Vines were covered with polyethylene sheeting from mid-February until the end of May. A range of organically acceptable treatments (including hyperparasites, colloidal sulfur and sodium bicarbonate) were tried out for controlling Oidium, thrips and Lobesia botrana. These were not totally successful and yields were lower than hoped. Labour requirements were increased as affected fruits needed removing.
