摘要:<正>Cultivating English talents of compound abilities has been a guiding language policy at the tertiary level in China for years. However, there are controversies regarding the approach to achieving this goal. Some stress the importance of "language plus subject matter",others call for humanistic educational tradition. This paper argues that integrating language and content instruction(CBI) may offer a solution to the problem.CBI is relatively new in China. In doing this research, the paper firstly clarifies two issues;(1) how to define content;and(2) what’s the proportion of language and content in CBI.Inspired by Met’s classification of CBI models, this paper discusses specifically how CBI is applied to China’s language teaching contexts. The CBI practice in Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade is used particularly to demonstrate the findings. The paper concludes that CBI program can play a positive role in the "cultivation of English talents of compound abilities".In the practice of CBI,the students’ language proficiency and the teachers’ expertise in language should be taken into account.
摘要:<正>Although the official approval for the first Business English Major(BEM) appeared in 2006,there have been 7 universities with BE Major so far. However, the educating models, curriculum designs and course materials vary greatly in China. This paper aims to introduce and discuss the feasibility of a general business-oriented model for BE curriculum design through analyzing the data collected from questionnaire researches on BE graduates in 2005,2006, 2007,2008 and 2009 from Northeast Normal University according to ESP theories and needs analysis. The results of this empirical research support the feasibility of this model and the importance of matching up BE courses design with students’ needs. It is hoped that this research can bring some insightful reference data as well as some suggestions to BE curriculum design study in the future.
