Earthquake Science
A Brief Introduction to ACTA SEISMOLOGICA SINICA(The Bulletin of the Seismological Society of China)Acta Seismologica Sinica is a comprehensive publication on seismology by the Seismological Society of China. Its Honorary Editor-in-Chief is Professor and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Xin Ling QIN, Editor-in-Chief is Professor and Member of the CAS Yun Tai CHEN. The first issue of Chinese edition of the ASS was published in 1979, and that of the English edition in 1988. From 1994 both the English and Chinese editions started to publish not only one-to-one correspondence but also distributed to domestic and abroad simultaneously. From 1997, the publication period was changed from four to six issues per year. The two editions of ASS have been brought into Wanfang Digitized Journal Group and China Academy Journal Compact Disk (CAJ-CD) and China Journal Network (CJN). It is intended for those scientists and engineers, teachers and students in universities and colleges, engaged in seismology and geophysics in China and abroad. The main topics published are as follows: (1) Results of scientific and technical research in seismology as well as papers regarding geophysics, tectonics and engineering related to earthquake studies; (2) Articles presenting differences of scientific point of view in the field of seismology; (3) The present status and significant advances on research related to seismology; (4) Comments and discussions concerning seismology; (5) The recent trend of science and technology in seismology. ASS is a very important core journal in seismology and geophysics in China.In 1992, ASS won the First Class Prize which awarded by the State Seismological Bureau of China in May, First Class Prize by the Chinese Association of Science and Technology in September, First Class Prize by Beijing Editorial Society in December, and First Class Prize by the Department of Propaganda of Central committee of Chinese Communist Party, State Science and Technology Commission of China and the Office of Press and Publication of China in December. In 1996, ASS won again the First Class Prize which awarded by the China Seismological Bureau, Second class prize by the State Science and Technology Commission of China, and Second Class Prize in the whole nation compare and assessment of journal. In 1999, ASS won the “Nomination Prize” of China journal. In 2001, ASS was selected to the Chinese Journal Square Matrix, and won the “Double Prize Journal” of China.   • 摘要：Receiver functions(RFs)obtained using teleseismic wave records at a seismic station and synthetic seismograms indicate that RF with a single teleseismic wave record is related to the selection of record section and to the calculating parameters of the RF.The scatter noise contained in the seismogram also affects the quality of RF.A new method for calculating receiver function,stacking and smoothing multi-seismic records in a single station,is presented in this paper.The RF results using some records and some synthetic seismograms with different noises indicate prominent mantle discontinuity and thus prove that the method is effective and satisfied.
  • 摘要：On the condition that the velocity ratio of compressive wave to shear wave is stable during the propagating process of seismic wave,this paper develops an estimation method for medium quality factor based on single station's travel time difference between direct S and P waves and the first period signal of direct P wave.8 774 high SNR wave data altogether recorded by 75 stations are analyzed.The results show that:(1)under the normal regional stress field,the quality factors QmSP in the stable tectonic area are higher than that in the active tectonic area around the Weifang-Jiashan section and its surrounding area in the Tanlu fault zone;(2)in the Juxian-Tancheng section the seismic wave attenuation is relatively quick,and the media is relatively broken,suggesting no tectonic stress accumulation;(3)the Xinyi-Sihong section is currently locking and in accumulating elastic strain energy stage,which has the deep environment and conditions of strong earthquake generation similar to those of the 1668 M 8.5 Tancheng strong earthquake.
  • 摘要：Based on the ionospheric electromagnetic data observed on DEMETER satellite of France, the ionospheric electromagnetic signals were analyzed within 10 days before Chile M7.9 earthquake on November 14, 2007. It is found that, low frequency electromagnetic disturbances began to increase in a large scale of latitude, and reached to a maximum one week prior to the earthquake, and at about three days before the quake, the peak values shifted to lower latitude. Taking three days as a group, spatial images of a few parameters were analyzed, from which it can be seen during the five days prior to this earthquake, the amplitude and scale of anomalies are enlarged, while the epicenter is located at the boundary of anomalous region. The anomalous tempo-spatial variation in electron density prior to the earthquake were also obtained in terms of tracing the data from revisited orbits in half a year prior to the quake.
  • 摘要：The data of ionospheric perturbations observed on DEMETER before the 2007 Pu'er earthquake are analyzed. The three-component plasma (ions, electrons and heavy ions) is studied in the fluid concept. The linear dispersion relation for ion-acoustic wave is found in the presence of heavy ions. The nonlinear dynamics is studied for arbitrary amplitude of the wave. The Sagdeev potential is calculated, which shows that solitary structure exists for Mach number within a range defined by the presence of heavy ions. The developed ion-acoustic solitons may be used as precursor for earthquake prediction.
  • 摘要：Digital elevation model (DEM) can be generated by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). In this paper, the interferometric processing and analyses are carried out for Damxung-Yangbajain area in Tibet, using a pair of Europe remote-sensing satellite (ERS)-1/2 tandem SAR images acquired on 6 and 7 April 1996. A portion of the In- SAR-derived DEM is selected and compared with the 1:50 000 DEM to determine the precision of the InSAR-derived DEM. The comparison indicates that the root mean squared errors (RMSE), which are used to evaluate error, are about 35, 60, 10, and 15 m in the studied area, mountainous area, basin area and near-fault area, respectively, suggesting that obvious errors are mainly in mountainous area. Besides, the limitation of InSAR technology to generate DEM is analyzed. Our investigation shows that InSAR is an effective tool in geodesy and an important complement to field surveying in some dangerous areas.
  • 摘要：The static corner frequency and dynamic corner frequency in stochastic synthesis of ground motion from finite-fault modeling are introduced, and conceptual disadvantages of the two are discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the non-uniform radiation of seismic wave on the fault plane, as well as the trend of the larger rupture area, the lower corner frequency, can be described by the source spectral model developed by the authors. A new dynamic corner frequency can be developed directly from the model. The dependence of ground motion on the size of subfault can be eliminated if this source spectral model is adopted in the synthesis. Finally, the approach presented is validated from the comparison between the synthesized and observed ground motions at six rock stations during the Northridge earthquake in 1994.
  • 摘要：On the basis of 10 935 broadband velocity records of 135 earthquakes (ML3.0-6.4 and epicentral distance of 26-623 km) occurred from May 12 to June 10 in 2008, which are collected from 27 bedrock stations included in Sichuan Earthquake Monitoring Network, the corresponding acceleration records are obtained by a real-time simulation method. Then by regression analysis on the data, the relation between the peak ground acceleration and velocity attenuation of small and moderate bedrock earthquakes occurred in Sichuan region is acquired. And the relation is verified by a M4.8 earthquake took place recently in Wenchuan. Finally, the attenuation relations, which are coincident to the geological conditions in Si-chuan region, are proposed by studying the records from Sichuan earthquake network.
  • 摘要：Strong ground motion parameters for Shillong plateau of northeastern India are examined. Empirical relations are obtained for main parameters of ground motions as a function of earthquake magnitude, fault type, source depth, velocity characterization of medium and distance. Correlation between ground motion parameters and characteristics of seismogenic zones are established. A new attenuation relation for peak ground acceleration is developed, which predicts higher expected PGA in the region. Parameters of strong motions, particularly the predominant periods and duration of vibrations, depend on the morphology of the studied area. The study measures low estimates of logarithmic width in Shillong plateau. The attenuation relation estimated for pulse width critically indicates increased pulse width dependence on the logarithmic distance which accounts for geometrical spreading and anelastic attenuation.
  • 摘要：Based on analyses of the spatio-temporal evolutionary characteristics of teleseismic response recorded by Fu-jian subsurface fluid network and in combination with earthquakes happened in Fujian province during the same period, this paper points out that the step-like rising of water level after distant earthquakes may include some regional stress field information, and the area where water level step-like rises could be the position that the stress concentrated on and where the future earthquakes would occur. If combined with other impending precursors, the location of the events may be predicted to a certain degree.
  • 摘要：This paper quantitatively analyzed groundwater table fluctuations caused by groundwater overdraft, and probed into the possibility of drawing earthquake precursory information from groundwater table variations on the background of groundwater overdraft. Main effect factors of groundwater regime in Beijing region include groundwater extraction and rainfall. The decline of groundwater table was directly related to regional groundwater overdraft. Using the method of correlation analysis, the paper analyzed the relation between groundwater overdraft and groundwater level variations, with the aim of evaluating the effect of groundwater overdraft on water levels in observation wells and providing scientific basis for identifying seismic precursory information. The results indicate that the variations of groundwater level in slightly-affected zones of groundwater overdraft can contain some seismic precursory information, and it is possible to extract seismic precursory anomalies if proper mathematical methods are adopted to remove the trend component and annual period changes.
  • 摘要：We present an example of using converted-waves for characterizing onshore gas reservoirs in the Ordos basin in Northwest China. The Ordos basin is the largest gas province in China. The main gas reservoirs (about 3 300 m in depth) are in upper Paleozoic sandstone that has low or reversed P-wave impedance and is immediately above a coal seam. This makes it very difficult to image the gas reservoirs using conventional P-wave data. Analysis of core, log and VSP data shows a weak PP reflection but a relatively strong PS-converted wave reflection, or both strong PP- and PS-reflections but with opposite polarity from the gas bearing sands, which indicates the potential of using PS-waves to image the gas reservoirs in the Ordos basin. Subsequently, thirteen seismic lines were acquired, processed and interpreted to verify the PP- and PS-responses, and two corresponding attributes (PP- and PS- amplitude ratio and polarity ratio) are used to map the reser-voirs through joint PP and PS analysis.
  • 摘要：This paper introduces the method of support vector machine (SVM) into the field of synthetic earthquake pre-diction, which is a non-linear and complex seismogenic system. As an example, we apply this method to predict the largest annual magnitude for the North China area (30°E-42°E, 108°N-125°N) and the capital region (38°E-41.5°E, 114°N-120°N) on the basis of seismicity parameters and observed precursory data. The corresponding prediction rates for the North China area and the capital region are 64.1% and 75%, respectively, which shows that the method is feasible.
  • 摘要：It is difficult to acquire deep seismic reflection profiles on land using the standard oil-industry acquisition parameters. This is especially true over much of Tibetan plateau not only because of severe topography and rapid variation of both velocity and thickness of near-surface layer,but also strong attenuation of seismic wave through the thickest crust of the Earth. Large explosive sources had been successfully detonated in US,but its application in Tibetan plateau rarely has an example of good quality. Presented herein is the data of a 200-kg single shot we recorded in west Qinling,northeastern Tibetan plateau. The shot gather data with phenomenal signal-to-noise ratios illustrate the energy of the PmP phase. Although the observations are only limited to the northeastern Tibetan plateau and thus cannot comprise an exhaustive study,they nevertheless suggest that large explosions may be a useful exploration tool in Tibetan Plateau where standard seismic sources and profiling methods fail to produce adequate data of low crust.
  • 摘要：Three experiments are carried out for earthquake monitoring using electromagnetic (EM) methods in recent years. Some earthquakes occurred in chance of the measurement time period for each experiment and the anomalies were recorded before the shocks. The observation at a site 20 km away from the epicenter of Zhangbei MS6.2 earthquake in 1998 shows that the apparent resistivity decreases in the strike direction before and/or during the earthquake and the resistivity increases in the de-cline direction. This anomalous variation in apparent resistivity accounts for about 20%. The apparent resistivities at a site in the epicentral area decrease in the strike and decline directions before and/or during the earthquake and increase after shocks. The experiments using artificial electromagnetic signals with super low frequency carried out in 1999 show that the resolution and stability of electric and magnetic spectra are improved. The spectra of electric and magnetic fields and apparent resistivity at the Baodi station began to anomalously change two days before the Qian'an earthquake with 120 km distant to the station. The anomalous variation of electric and magnetic spectra is about twice as great as normal variation and the apparent resistivity changes by about 20%. The measurements in active seismic area of Yunnan province in the year 2005 indicate that the electric and magnetic spectra anomalously change by one order before the Taoyuan earthquake about 100 km away from the observa-tories. But the measurements at the sites in Beijing area 2 000 km away from the epicenter do not show any anomaly.
  • 摘要：The three-dimension crustal and upper mantle structures in the region around Beijing were studied by seismic tomography. We used the P wave arrival times from local and teleseismic events. These events were recorded by 250 stations of the North China Seismic Array and 108 stations of the Beijing Telemetry Seismic Network. 118 869 P wave arrivals from 10 285 local events and 12 189 P wave arrivals from 107 teleseismic events were used in the inversion. We obtained the 3-D P wave velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle with the horizontal resolution of 0.3° in the studied region. The tomographic imaging shows the remarkably heterogeneous velocity variation. The velocity anomalies are in well agreement with the geological structure in the shallow crust. The different relationships between seismic activities and velocity anomalies may imply the different seismogenic structure and mechanism. Beneath the Moho under Taihangshan mountain and Yanshan mountain,we found the high velocity anomalies deep to 120 km and 200 km,respectively. The deep high velocity zone may be explained by the existence of the mountain root under Yanshan mountain. The high velocity anomalies in the upper mantle of North China basin may be the relics of the de-rooting from the former craton mantle lithosphere.
  • 摘要：The S wave velocity structure in Changbaishan volcanic region was obtained from teleseismic receiver func-tion modeling. The results show that there exist distinct low velocity layers in crust in volcano area. Beneath WQD station near to the Tianchi caldera the low velocity layer at 8 km depth is 20 km thick with the lowest S-wave velocity about 2.2 km/s. At EDO station located 50 km north of Tianchi caldera,no obvious crustal low velocity layer is detected. In the volcanic re-gion,the thickness of crustal low velocity layer is greater and the lowest velocity is more obvious with the distance shorter to the caldera. It indicates the existence of the high temperature material or magma reservoir in crust near the Tianchi caldera. The receiver functions and inversion result from different back azimuths at CBS permanent seismic station show that the thickness of near surface low velocity layer and Moho depth change with directions. The near surface low velocity layer is obviously thicker in south direction. The Moho depth shows slight uplifting in the direction of the caldera located. We con-sider that the special near surface velocity structure is the main cause of relatively lower prominent frequency of volcanic earthquake waveforms recorded by CBS station. The slight uplifting of Moho beneath Tianchi caldera indicates there is a material exchanging channel between upper mantle and magma reservoir in crust.
  • 摘要：The rupture process of the May 12,2008 MS8.0 Wenchuan earthquake was very complex. To study the rupture zones generated by this earthquake,four dense temporary seismic arrays across the two surface breaking traces of the main-shock were deployed in July and recorded a great amount of aftershocks. This paper focuses on the data interpretation of two arrays across the central main fault,the northern array line 1 and southern array line 3. The fault zone trapped waves recorded by the two arrays were used to study the structure of the central main fault and the difference between the northern and southern portions. The results show that the widths of the rupture zone are about 170?200 m and 200?230 m for northern and southern portions respectively. And the corresponding dip angles are 80° and 70°. The seismic velocity inside the fracture zone is about one half of the host rock. By comparison,the northern portion of the rupture zone is slightly narrower and steeper than the southern portion. Besides these differences,one more interesting and important difference is the positions of the rupture zone with respect to surface breaking traces. At the northern portion,the rupture zone is centered at the surface breaking trace,while at the southern portion it is not but is shifted to the northwest. This difference reflects the difference of rupture behaviors between two portions of the central main fault. The width of the rupture zone is smaller than that of M8.1 Kunlun earthquake though these two earthquakes have almost the same magnitudes. Multiple ruptures may be one factor to cause the narrower rupture zone.
  • 摘要：In this paper,we present wavelet transformation method to measure interstation phase velocity. We use Morlet wavelet function as mother wavelet to filter two seismograms at various period of interest,and correlate the wavelet filtered seismograms to form cross-correlogram. If both wavelet filtered signals are in phase at that period,the phase of the cross-correlogram is a minimum. Using 3-spline interpolation to transform cross-correlation matrix to a phase velocity verse period image,it is convenient for us to measure interstation phase velocity.

There are not only north-south extrusions but also east-west extensions in the Tibetan Plateau. All these phenomena are the results of the Indian plate subducting into the Eurasia plate about 70 Ma
  • 摘要：Earthquake data include informative seismic phases that require identification for imaging the Earth's structural interior.In order to identify the phases,we created a numerical method to calculate the traveltimes and raypaths by a shooting technique based upon the IASP91 Earth model,and it can calculate the traveltimes and raypaths for not only the seismic phases in the traditional traveltime tables such as IASP91,AK135,but also some phases such as pPcP,pPKIKP,and PPPPP.It is not necessary for this method to mesh the Earth model,and the results from the numerical modeling and its application show that the absolute differences between the calculated and theoretical traveltimes from the ISAP91 tables are less than 0.1 s.Thus,it is simple in manipulation and fast in computation,and can provide a reliable theoretical prediction for the identification of a seismic phase within the acquired earthquake data.
  • 摘要：Iran sits on a region with a high intrinsic level of seismic activity due to its tectonic setting.Through statistical examination of the earthquakes listed in the catalogue from International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology(IIEES),this research attempted to calculate some seismicity factors and find correlation between them.A preliminary analysis indicated changes in theb-value of the Gutenberg-Richter relationship over the study region.Thus,the study area was divided into five zones(Alborz,Zagros,Azerbaijan,Central and East)andb-value was computed for each zone.Considering faulting mechanism styles and theb-values in the region,it was found that the lowestb-values belong to the thrust events and strike-slip faulting earthquakes have intermediate values.These findings support previous studies.Furthermore,results ofb-value calculation were used for the estimation of accumulated differential stresses(σ1–σ2)over each zone.Overall,theb-value for Iran is averagely low which signifies the high stress tectonic regime in this region.Also,by having calculated fractal dimension(D)in each zone,a correlation obtained showing that in Iran region,theb-value correlates to fractal dimension byD=4.2b–2 relation which does not support Aki's(1981)speculation ofD=3b/c.
  • 摘要：Persian territory,which is dividable into major seismotectonic provinces,always suffers from damages of moderate and large earthquakes from ancient era to modern time.Therefore,temporal prediction of earthquake occurrence in this kind of area is an important topic.For this purpose,628 moderate-large(5.5≤MS≤8.2)earthquakes occurred in Persia during the period from 400 B.C.to 2015 C.E.were used.Considering the magnitudes of events preceding main shocks and the annual seismic moment release in seismic source areas in the provinces,we calibrated equations predicting inter-event time of occurrence of moderate and large earthquakes(MW>5.5)in Iran.In each source area,inter-event times between moderate and large shocks with magnitudes equal to or larger than a certain cut-off magnitude(MW5.5)were calculated.The inter-event times between the earthquakes were used to compute the relationships using multiple regression technique.Calculated relationships express the basic idea of the time predictable model predicting the occurrence time of the future main shock in a certain seismogen area.However,despite of unavoidable scatter in observations and uncertainties in the results,occurrence times of main shocks during the next years and decades in some source areas in Iran were determined.
  • 摘要：According to the actual observation conditions of the Yangtze River valley from Anqing city to Maanshan city,we designed the 3D acquisition geometry,and applied the multi-scale checkerboard semblance analysis to assess the preliminary resolution of the designed observation.The checkerboard semblance tests use the refraction and reflection travel-time simultaneous inversion algorithm to quantitatively provide both resolution assessment of velocity structure and Moho topography.The multi-scale checker-board semblance recovery results show that while the chec-kerboard semblance threshold value is 0.5,the preliminary resolution of the designed acquisition geometry is better than 10 km in the upper crust(the depth is less than 10 km),around 15 km in the mid-crust(the depth is 10?25 km),and better than 20 km in the lower crust(the depth is 25?33 km).The preliminary tomographic resolution for the Moho topography is about 20 km in the ray-path coverage area beneath the acquisition geometry.While the checkerboard semblance threshold value is 0.75,the preliminary resolution is 20 km in the upper crust,around 20?25 km in the mid-crust and 25 km in the lower crust.And the preliminary tomographic resolution for the Moho topography is better than 30 km in the ray-path coverage area beneath the acquisition geometry.These non-linear checkerboard tests reveal that the designed acquisition geometry is suitable to image the crustal velocity structure of the Yangtze River valley in the Anhui province.
  • 摘要：The term,strong motion seismology,has been emerged recently years and more and more researchers believe this could be a new branch of both seismology and earthquake engineering.The scientific goal of this branch is understanding the phenomena of ground motion and also to prevent economic loss by providing an accurate description of seismic hazards.It concerns with the nearfield strong ground motion.
  • 摘要：The stochastic finite-fault simulation method was applied to synthesize the horizontal ground acceleration seismograms produced by the MW6.1 Ludian earthquake on August 3,2014.For this purpose,we produced first a total of 200 kinematic source models for the Ludian event,which are characterized by the heterogeneous slip on the conjugated ruptured fault and the slip-dependent spreading of the rupture front.The results indicated that the heterogeneous slip and the spatial extent of the ruptured fault play dominant roles in the spatial distribution of ground motions in the near-fault area.The peak ground accelerations(PGAs)and 5%-damped pseudospectral accelerations(PSAs)at periods shorter than 0.5 s estimated on the resulting synthetics generally match well with the observations at stations with Joyner-Boore distances(RJB)greater than 20 km.The synthetic PGVs and PSAs at periods of 0.5 s and 0.75 s are in good agreement with predicted medians by the Yu14 model(Yu et al.,2014).However,the synthetic results are generally much lower than the predicted medians by BSSA14 model(Boore et al.,2014).Moreover,the ground motion variability caused by the randomness in the source rupture process was evaluated by these synthetics.The standard deviations of PSAs on the base-10 logarithmic scale,Sigma[log10(PSA)],are closely dependent on either the spectral period or the RJB.The Sigma[log10(PSA)]remains a constant approximately 0.55 at periods shorter than 0.1 s,and then increase continuously up to^0.13 as the period increases from 0.1 to 2.0 s.The Sigma[log10(PSA)]values at periods of 0.1‒2.0 s show the downward tendency as the RJB values increase.However,the Sigma[log10(PSA)]​values at periods shorter than 0.1 s decrease as the RJB values increase up to^50 km,and then increase with the increasing RJB.Furthermore,we found that the ground-motion variability shows the significant dependence on the azimuth.
  • 摘要：Stochastic modeling of ground motion is a simple tool to predict ground shaking level for future earthquake and less time consuming than physics-based deterministic modeling.In this paper,a record-based stochastic method that considers the time-and frequency-evolution of ground motion is used to estimate ground motion for scenario earthquakes in tectonic active region.The stochastic method employs a time-domain modulation function to describe the temporal nonstationarity and a filter impulse response function that describe the evolution of frequency content.For characterizing the modulation function and the filter impulse function,six parameters(Ia,D5-95,tmid,ωmid,ω',ξf)are defined,and 2,571 pairs of ground motion recording in the NGA-west2 database are selected to identify the six parameters.Probabilistic density function is assigned to each of the parameter by fitting the frequency distribution histogram.The parameters are then transformed into standard normal space where regression analysis is performed by considering each parameter as function of moment magnitude,rupture distance,vS30(The time-averaged shear wave velocity of the top 30 m of soil).The prediction equations are used to generate ground motions for several scenario earthquakes and compared to NGA-West2 GMPEs.
  • 摘要：Frequent aftershocks often follow a strong mainshock.They can significantly increase cumulative damage to a structure.A model of a five-story reinforced concrete frame structure was designed and a nonlinear mathematical model of the structure was developed to investigate the damage states resulting from different mainshock-aftershock sequences.Mainshock-aftershock sequences consisting of one of three recorded mainshocks combined with one of five recorded aftershocks were created for input to the mathematical model.Inelastic energy dissipation and the Park-Ang damage index were used as measures of cumulative damage to the structure.The results demonstrate that consideration of only the single mainshock ground motion in seismic building design can result in the design and construction of unsafe buildings.Total cumulative damage to a structure is caused by the combination of damage states resulting from the mainshock and the aftershock(s).
  • 摘要：The indirect boundary element method(IBEM)is applied to investigate the scattering of elastic waves around a 3-D sedimentary basin filled with fluid-saturated poroelastic medium.Based on this method,the free field and scattered field can be solved according to the boundary conditions.And the numerical accuracy has been verified.The effects of parameters on elastic wave scattering are studied,such as boundary condition,incident frequency,incident angle and porosity of medium.Numerical results illustrate that the amplification effect of surface displacement near poroelastic sedimentary basin is notable.In addition,for the case of large porosity the drainage condition has a significant impact on the response amplitude.Due to the fluid exchange at the interface under the drained condition,the displacement amplitude can be much larger than that under the undrained condition in present study.The study can provide a theoretical basis for the anti-seismic design of engineering structures located in sedimentary basin.
  • 摘要：According to volume 18(Xuanzong Ji Tang)of the historical book entitled the Old Book of Tang,the Hetao area of Inner Mongolia experienced a large earthquake in AD 849.However,previous work on that earthquake contains many discrepancies regarding its epicenter location,magnitude,deaths,and intensity.While exploring active faults in Baotou City,the present authors mapped the Daqing Mountain piedmont fault geologically.Based on previous work,several seismic deformation traces of more than 1000 years ago were found,and dating tests were conducted.The research showed the Daqing Mountain piedmont fault zone to be the seismogenic structure of the AD 849 earthquake.The length of earthquake surface rupture zone was around 80 km,and the macro epicenter was located in the active fault.The deformation center was located at 40.6°N,110.2°E.By collecting and analyzing more historical data about the AD 849 earthquake,reinterpreting some existing historical data,and re-examining the contradictory numbers of deaths in the historical data,the present analysis concludes that around 10,000 people were dead.It is suggested that this earthquake had a magnitude of 7½.According to the revised seismic parameters and the paleoearthquake recurrence period of the Daqing Mountain piedmont fault,the boundary of some potential seismic sources zone in the Baotou area are adjusted and the recurrence period of M8 and M7.5 are re-calculated.
