Spirituality: What is it and Why it Matters

At a time when increasingly more people identify as "spiritual but not religious," it becomes necessary to understand what spirituality truly means, as well as its relevance in the modern world. While religion usually describes a particular worldview, defining a particular set of rules in a specific cultural context, spirituality can be defined as a personal yearning for a deeper connection with a reality that transcends worldly experience, whether the search is internal or external, depending on one's tradition or cultural context. In many ways, it is the underlying motivation from which religion springs and eventually is defined and codified. It is a journey into understanding ourselves, the world, and our place in it.
