The ongoing "energy turn" in Germany represents one of the most ambitious, seminal and also risky projects for a more sustainable future on a national scale. Due to Germany's central role in world economy and the European Union's explicit drive to run the "locomotive" for global environmental innovation, this prestigious process concerns not only European but the whole of international environmental politics. And as energy (overconsumption) is one of the most crucial drivers for modern social life (including climate change), the success or failure of the German national experiment will directly impact the world economy and other nations' and companies' strategies. To what extent can one regard the "Energiewende" (the German term alludes to "die Wende," that is the turn down of Communist Eastern Germany and its integration in the Federal Republic in 1989) as a success for environmentalism, as the green movement appears at present highly ambitious? This book approaches this challenge with a specific focus on how energy changes morality and its capacity to mirror and accelerate a changing awareness of and reflection about risk. It gathers thirteen initiated authors from ethics, social sciences, law, theology and physics, and offers rich insight into sociocultural, political, moral, historical, economical, juridical and scientific aspects of the ongoing process.
