A new leather thickness measuring gauge

A new thickness measuring gauge has been developed that has consistently complied with leather thickness measuring standards. Computer software, Sirosplit, for use with the new gauge has also been developed. Large numbers of thickness measurements can be made in a much shorter time than using conventional gauges. Increasing the number of thickness measurements performed on leathers, when used in combination with Sirosplit software, enables accurate thickness maps to be produced that can be used to adjust machines or train operators to reduce variations in leather thickness. The new gauge has been used in tanneries, especially at the splitting and shaving stages of production to demonstrate that, when accurate and adequate numbers of thickness measurements are made, machine performance can be improved leading to reduced hide damage and increased leather yield.
