Many of the techniques used in leather finishing today have changed little in basic concept and approach over the past couple of decades or more. Spraying, roller coating and even padding have been available throughout this time and remain the most common means of transferring liquid finishing coats onto the surface of the leather. This not only creates both colour and effect, but also aims to upgrade the leather and to ensure that the level of performance required by the application and the customer is achieved consistently. Today's equipment would be recognisable to a tanner who retired twenty years ago. But its complexity and sophistication -making extensive use of electronic or computerised controls -would probably mean that he or she would be unable to use it without appreciable instruction in its operation. That is the major change - not how to apply the finish - but how the application of the finish is controlled. Electronic and computerised control enables precise settings and adjustments to be carried out and repeated from one batch to another using less skill than previously. Nevertheless, the mechanical transport system remains much the same, apart from the extensive use of automatic stacking machines to pile the leather directly from the end of the conveyor.
