Reading national newspapers in the United Kingdom recently would have one thinking that Marks & Spencer is a very British company. To many small shareholders it is but the perception ignores the international impact that a company of its size has. What this giant retailer does is carefully monitored around the world, from Slovenia, Tuerkiye, and South Africa to India and China and many countries in between. With a history going back to 1884 when Michael Marks formed a partnership with Tom Spencer, the company has developed to become one of the major players in the clothing and food retailing sector. The company has more than 300 stores throughout the UK serving 10 million customers per week. The company also trades in 30 countries worldwide and has a group turnover in excess of £8 billion, which includes a leather business of £250 million.
