The 111th Annual Sltc Conference 2008

The 111th annual conference and dinner of the Society of Leather Technologists and chemists was held in Telford UK on 27th September 2008, the event being attended by 65 people from the leather and associated industries. In total eight technical papers were presented, followed by the Annual General meeting of the Society. This included the transfer of Presidency of SLTC from John Avery to Christine Powley-Williams who will hold this post for two years. The Proctor Memorial Lecture was presented by Dr Heinz-Peter Germann, Director of the Lederinstitut Gerberschule Reutlingen, Germany, and was entitled "The ecological tannage - challenges and progress". Dr. Germann first presented an overview of the historical development of leather manufacture, mainly from the discovery of the tanning effect of chromium salts attributed to Friedrich Knap in 1858, via the two-bath tanning process and practical one-bath process to the high exhaust chrome tanning systems used today.
