Self-Interest Key to China IP Law Development

U.S. and international rights holders stand to benefit as Chinese companies increasingly rely on strong intellectual property protections, said China-based diplomats from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's IP Attache program. That the Chinese leadership has repeatedly cited intellectual property as an important part of the country's economic development also gives reason for optimism, they explained. The IP attaches were speaking at the Global IP Center's IP Attache Roundtable Dec. 15 in Washington, D.C. Despite the common narrative in the U.S. that China's economic development is driven by infringing foreign-owned IP, Joel Blank, the IP Attache in Beijing, explained that some Chinese companies have become important partners in the push for reform. These Chinese domestic companies have realized that they, too, need stronger IP laws.
