Improvements for historic Turnpike

Work is now starting on a US$2.7 billion project to widen the New Jersey Turnpike, which is intended to ease congestion. The project is likely to continue until 2014 and will increase the number of lanes along a section of road that only has three lanes in either direction at present, as opposed to the six lanes in either direction along much of the highway. The work will also extend a stretch of the road that is divided into a set of car-only lanes and a set of lanes for cars, buses and trucks further south along the road between Cranbury and the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange.
