Road design: 'a key factor'

The UK'S campaign for Safe Road Design believes that effective safety measures can cut the cost of road crashes by €50 billion a year.rnThe European Road Assessment Programme, EuroRAP, is publishing maps for 15 EU countries showing the busy high-risk roads where deaths are concentrated, but safer road design could cut annual road deaths and injuries by 50,000 and save up to 300 lives/day, says the Campaign.rnEuro NCAP crash tests havernhelped the public understand the role that features such as air bags and crumple zones play in cars with four and five star safety. Now there is an urgent need for public policymakers to understand the new EuroRAP mapping and how to cut road casualties by up to one-third through affordable safety engineering on high-risk roads.
