Under heavy Darwinian selective pressure, mammalian mother's milk has evolved over millennia to become the model bio-guided food for nourishing and protecting neonates. In addition to containing all nutrients necessary for infant growth and development, milk contains bioactive compounds that influence growth, immune system maturation, cognitive development, establishment of the intestinal microbiota and prevention of infection (Daniels and Adair, 2005; German et al., 2008).
