US Army Corps of Engineers' dredge Essayons celebrates 20 years

Twenty years ago, 250 guests gathered in Portland, Oregon (OR) to witness the dedication of the Essayons, a state-of-the-art, 6,000 yd~3, hopper (TH) dredge owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Former US Sen. Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon was the keynote speaker under clear blue skies on Sept. 22,1983. After his speech, he and Capt. Wilbur Dahn ordered the colors flown, officially dedicating the Essayons to help achieve the Corps' mission of maintaining the nation's rivers and harbors on the coasts of OR, California (CA), Alaska (AK) and Hawaii (HI).
