The Buckets of Gold Conference was convened in Alexandra, Central Otago, South Island of New Zealand on April 19-21, 2006. It was sponsored by The Central Otago Dredge Trust -A Conference on the Historical Development of Gold Dredging in New Zealand. While most of the papers were presented by New Zealanders whose interest was in the gold dredge mining history of NZ, it also included myself and a colleague from San Francisco: Noel Kirschenbaum. His paper was entitled: California 's Land-based Fleets of Gold Dredges. Noel was formerly employed by Placer Development of Canada whose company had been the originator of Consolidated Placer Dredging Co. (CPD) c. 1930. This paper is an excerpt of my paper and an overview of the presentations focusing upon NZ gold dredge development.
