EXCAVATED MATERIAL FOR THE 'GRAND PARIS EXPRESS': A 45 MILLION TONNE CHALLENGE

Over about ten years, the 'Grand Paris Express' metro project will produce 45 million tonnes of excavated material, consisting for 95% of uncontaminated natural soils. Société du Grand Paris, assisted by Artémis, has since 2012 developed an exemplary operational strategy for management of excavated material. In the current regulatory environment, excavated material has the status of waste. The management strategy comprises three main features: traceability of earth, recycling of materials, and mitigation of environmental nuisances by the optimised use of river and rail transport. A significant role is reserved for innovation and the development of specific contractual tools and techniques. The start of work on the contracts for Line 15 South will allow continuous improvement of the strategy of Société du Grand Paris.
