The lengthy courtship of wireless application developers by handset manufacturers and software platform vendors appears to be bearing fruit, as a new wave of games begins to finally deliver on the promise of the "wireless Internet." Due in large part to a convergence of a number of technologies-including packet data networks, improvements in handset form factors, standardized software platforms and rich on-device multimedia-gaming developers can view mobile platforms as viable targets when launching a new product. Because of the unique demands of wireless applications and the relatively small market size (as compared to the more mature desktop gaming market), the majority of wireless games are currently produced by companies specializing in mobile gaming.
