Washington-Wireless carriers, emergency communications organizations and local and national security officials are mulling over an as-yet-unexplored area of response to terrorist attacks - shutting down wireless phone service in tunnels and other regionally managed critical infrastructure. The day of the bombings in London's transportation system, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey switched off wireless services in the tunnels leading into and out of Manhattan as a precaution against attacks there. The Port Authority pulled the plug on wireless service in the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, while the MTA cut off wireless service in the Brooklyn/Battery and Queens Midtown tunnels. The MTA turned service back on three days later but the Port Authority waited about two weeks.
