Setting the Standard in Handsets

Wireless operators would like to be the final arbiter of the end-user experience, and to a great extent that is true. The end-user experience starts at the handset itself, so it makes sense that carriers want to control the device. Individual carrier specifications for devices will continue to exist, but some carrier officials think it is better to set standards for certain elements of the device. That was the vision that prompted the formation of the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP), a group created nearly two years ago by a small group of mostly European GSM carriers.
