Smartfren carries out second 5G trial using 26GHz mmWave spectrum

Indonesian mobile operator PT Smartfren Telecom (Smartfren), working in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Information (MCI, or KemKominfo), has held a second 5G network trial using frequencies in the 26GHz mmWave band, according to local press reports. The test was reportedly carried out at the Smartfren Gallery, in Sabang, Jakarta, on 17 June 2021, using higher band spectrum that has yet to be auctioned for 5G, while also passing over options to test 5G at 2300MHz -spectrum bandwidth it already owns. The trial was supported by ZTE and Qualcomm, and delivered speeds of more than 1.8Gbps on various customer premises equipment (CPE), including a MiFi 5G modem.
