While most of the world opted to go with one air interface standard for wireless communications, namely GSM, the Federal Communications Commission allowed U.S. licensees to chose their interface standard. The result has been a fragmented market that uses either TDMA, GSM or CDMA, depending on where you live. As carriers prepare to migrate their networks to third-generation technology, the problem of incompatible networks may find a solution in SIM (subscriber identity module) cards.
