With few exceptions, amplifiers require proper biasing for optimal performance and base station power amplifiers are no exceptions. Improper amplifier bias results in reduced RF performance, and in turn, reduced base station performance. To address the issue of amplifier temperature instability, this article will discuss the two classes of biasing that are prevalent in the RF industry, analyze their characteristics, and present biasing implementations on existing ICs.
