Designing a self-powered AMR that can operate maintenance-free for decades requires an integrated approach, combining the use of a low-power communication protocol, advanced microprocessors, board level components, and other energy-saving techniques, to maximize battery operating life while delivering uncompromised product performance: a solution that has relevant implications for many other remote wireless applications. Water, gas, and electric utilities worldwide are rapidly deploying "smart metering" solutions to enhance operational efficiency and to better serve their customers. While the vast majority of utilities still use mechanical or analog metering technologies, "smart metering" solutions are being widely adopted throughout North America, with nearly half of all customers now being connected to some form of "smart metering" solution.
