The most famous stretch of fairways in the world lies along the Pacific Coast just north of Carmel, California, on the celebrated Pebble Beach Golf Links. The first two holes in the stretch - the fourth and fifth on the course -run parallel to the sea, but the next one plays straight out onto a small peninsula extending into Monterey Bay. At 500 yards, the sixth is one of the most difficult at Pebble; the ground lurches upward about 175 yards to the green, which rests on a bluff above the sea. A few months ago, I found myself at the base of that hill after a long first shot. My chances of getting close to the hole were bleak. It was a classic blind approach: no view of the green, no flag fluttering over the horizon. What I could see - the cliffs and a few jagged cypress trees waiting to knock my ball down to the beach below - made 1 shot that much more daunting.
