It's a measure of his success that Tim McGraw's chief frustration this day has nothing to do with a lazy record company, a fickle fan base or any of the other standard recording industry vagaries. No, today McGraw is mainly concerned about his hat—a ragged black straw cowboy hat with rolled-up edges and a brim that droops like a windblown awning. The hat has seen better days; it has soaked up a lifetime of sweat and smoke and a flood of photons from a thousand stage lights, but McGraw just can't bring himself to put it down. "A new hat never looks right," he says. "By the time you get it how you want it, you've got a good year out of it. Then you got a year of it being right. Then you go another two years because you're scared to let go of it and try a new one."
