It is midday on a bright, blazing Thursday in July, but it's dark inside this cavernous pool hall and bar some 20 minutes outside New Orleans. It's the kind of lowdown nocturnal joint that doesn't get off the couch until sunset, and right now the place is deserted. The morning cleanup man jumps a foot in the air on encountering a living presence in the women's bathroom. "We're not used to ladies around here," he explains, "especially during the day." He might add that this broken-down address is not where you would expect to find the five relatively cheerful, well-tailored members of Duran Duran, which for five years was probably the biggest rock band in the world. Starting with "Rio," in 1982, it ran up a string of memorable hits including "Girls on Film," "Hungry Like the Wolf," "The Reflex" and "Notorious" and put its visual stamp on dance pop with expensive, arty videos that made the band the visual paradigm of the new wave luxe life.
