Among the wonders shown at the 1964 New York World's Fair was the AT&T Picturephone, a system that allowed two people in video-telephone booths to make phone calls while peering at each other through TV screens. Though packaged as a symbol of the Jetson-esque future, it was an old idea even then. Popular science publications in the 1870s imagined a visual device called a telephonoscope.
