Fancy sparkling waters like Perrier can cost twice as much per liter as gasoline. The reason for that, bottlers say, is unique geology. Nothing from the tap can match the combination of minerals and carbon-ation that gets into these waters as they percolate up through layers of earth specific to each locale. Nonsense, says Martin Lersch of Rakke-stad, Norway, who clones 100-liter batches of mineralized H_2O using household chemicals and water from his faucet. By day, Lersch is an organic chemist who develops green fuels at a biorefinery.
