del Toro's Pacific Rim, out in July, are 250 feet tall. Called Jaegers, these giants mimic the synchronized motions of two mentally linked pilots during fistfights with Godzilla-dwarfing creatures called Kaiju. Making a humanoid robot 40 times the size of a person look believable is hard enough, but the physics of this supersizing is especially dicey. We got an exclusive look at a Pacific Rim scene—a fight between a Jaeger named Gipsy Danger and a 400-foot-long Kaiju. The visual effects are awesome, but it got us thinking about how giant-robot-on-monster action would actually work. So we did the math.
