Senate deliberations, trade federations, security legislation-not only are the Star Wars movies more political than many "political films," they can be positively wonky. And that's a good thing. Or rather, it can be. The narrative in the prequels seems to reflect George Lucas' liberal views on the "imperial" presidencies of Richard Nixon and post-9/11 George W. Bush.. But they acknowledge the frustrations that can lead to a desire for consolidated power. As Queen Padme Amidala puts it when the Galactic Senate dismisses her pleas for help: "I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee." It's a sentiment not entirely from a galaxy far, far away.
