Advances in FAA obstruction lighting for wind turbines have been just as rapid as the changes to wind turbines. The industry has moved from incandescent bulb systems through the use of strobe systems, to the self-contained, all-in-one, all LED fixtures used today. Initially almost all wind turbines in a farm were lit with either a low intensity steady burning fixture, or an independently flashing medium intensity fixture. Through the efforts of the major lighting manufacturers and the FAA, fewer lights are used on a wind farm, just as larger megawatt turbines have reduced the number of turbines needed.
