Lee Tunnel project gets Busy

A Giant tunnelling machine has been lowered into a gigantic shaft, deeper than anything else in London to start digging the four-mile, ￡635M Lee Tunnel, which will prevent 16M tonnes of sewage entering the River Lee each year. The machine, called Busy Lizzie, is 8m in diameter and 120m long. The 800-tonne cutter head was the first piece of the drill lowered. Lee Tunnel, which is being built by joint venture MVB, is a huge engineering challenge that involves tunnelling through high groundwater pressures and passing through four miles of the most abrasive ground from the starting point at Beckton to the desti- nation at Abbey Mills. Busy Lizzie has been custom-designed to suit London's ground conditions.
