Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is an electric arc welding process where the heat for welding is generated by an electric arc between a covered electrode and the workpiece. Filler metal is deposited from the electrode, and the electrode covering provides alloy elements and shielding from atmospheric contamination and conditions. SMAW is the most popular, simplest and most versatile arc welding process. Welding can be done in all positions, on materials as thin as 18 gauge, and at long distances from the power source, making it an ideal process for welding in the field. Typically used for welding mild- and low-alloy steels, the process is used for both ferrous and many nonferrous metals. High quality, strong weld joints result.
